List of Ingredients
1 cup butter, at room temperature (2 sticks)
1 cup granulated sugar
1 egg
1 tablespoon sour cream
1/2 teaspoon vanilla
1/4 teaspoon almond extract
1/2 teaspoon baking soda
21/2 cups all-purpose flour, plus more if needed
Icing:
1 cup powdered sugar
Up to 2 tablespoons milk
Up to 1/8 teaspoon red food coloring
Up to 1/8 teaspoon cinnamon oil (see note)
Recipe
To make cookies: In a stand mixer set on medium speed, beat the butter and sugar until creamy. Beat in the egg and sour cream until well-blended. Beat in the vanilla and almond extract. In another bowl, whisk together the baking soda and flour. Add one-third of the flour mixture to the butter mixture and beat on low speed until blended. Add the remaining flour in portions and beat until a fairly stiff dough forms. Divide in half and flatten each portion into a disk. Wrap in plastic wrap and chill for 2 hours or until firm.
Preheat oven to 350 degrees. For easier handling, soften the dough by allowing it to sit at room temperature for several minutes. Roll it out 1/8 inch thick on a floured surface or between 2 sheets of heavy-duty plastic wrap. Using a gnome-shaped cookie cutter, cut the cookies and carefully transfer to an ungreased baking sheet. Bake until the cookies are firm, 8 to 10 minutes. Let the cookies cool slightly before transferring to a rack to cool completely. Decorate gnome hats with icing.
YIELD: 4 Dozen
To make icing: In a small bowl, mix together the powdered sugar and milk to a spreadable consistency. Stir in the food coloring. Stir in the cinnamon oil to taste.
Note: Cinnamon oil is available at specialty baking stores.
