    6 egg whites
    1/2 teaspoon cream of tartar
    1 1/2 cups sugar
    6 egg yolks
    3/4 cup sugar
    1/4 teaspoon salt
    1/2 cup lime juice
    3 to 4 drops green food coloring
    1 1/2 cups whipping cream
    1 1/2 tablespoons grated lime peel

    Beat egg whites and cream of tartar on medium speed until foamy.

    Changing to high speed, gradually add the 1 1/2 cups sugar. Beat until stiff and glossy. Be sure it is well beaten
    Grease a 13- by 9- by 2-inch baking pan.

    Spread mixture in pan and bake at 275 degrees for 1 hour. Turn off heat. Leave in closed oven for at least 12 hours.

    Beat egg yolks until light and lemon colored.

    In a saucepan, mix egg yolks, 3/4 cup sugar, salt and lime juice. Over medium heat, cook and stir constantly until thickened (about 5 minutes).

    Cool to room temperature and add food coloring.

    Beat cream in a chilled bowl until stiff. Fold into lime mixture.

    Spread over meringue mixture. Refrigerate at least four hours.
