How to Test Your Crock Pot/Slow Cooker

Pour 8 cups water into cooker.
Cover and heat on low for 8 hours.
Check water temperature with an accurate cooking
thermometer. Do it quickly -- removing the lid just once can drop the temperature 10 to 15 degrees.
The thermometer should read about 185 degrees. A higher
reading suggests that a product cooked for 8 hours would be
overcooked. A reading at 180 degrees or lower suggests the
cooker doesn't generate sufficient heat to avoid potential food safety problems.
