• For round or square cakes, use a cheerfully colored frosting and cover it with decorative shapes.

• Use gummy bears, gummy worms, animal crackers and other fanciful candies around the cake. You could even put animal crackers atop cupcakes to let each child choose a signature animal cupcake.

• Use zip-sealed plastic bags with a corner cut out as a pastry bag. Seal the top and let the kids go crazy with the frosting. Pastry bag tips aren't required, and cutting a tiny corner off the bag lets just enough icing flow so kids can write on their cakes.

• Think beyond colored sprinkles. Try crushed peanut brittle, chocolate chips, licorice whips and mini-marshmallows.
