    Nine Patch Toast

    Source of Recipe

    Stacy Leonard

    List of Ingredients

    bread
    plastic knives
    swiss cheese slices
    american cheese slices

    Recipe

Give each child a piece of bread. Have them place a slice of swiss cheese on the bread. Give each child a slice of American cheese. Have them cut the cheese into three rows and three columns with a plastic knife to make 9 squares of cheese.

Each child should eat the top and bottom middle squares and the left and right middle squares. Have each child place the American cheese squares in the middle and top corners on top of the Swiss cheese slices to resemble a "nine patch" quilt.

Toast the bread slightly for a wonderful snack. As you can see, this activity requires the use of a lot of positional words. It fits in great with a quilt unit or fraction unit, and provides the children with a chance to practice cutting with a knife.

"I used this with my four-year old class during a quilt study and they loved it!" - Stacy
