    Golden Apple Coconut Pastries

    3 or 4 Golden Delicious apples
    1/2 cup packed brown sugar
    1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon
    1-1/2 cups shredded coconut
    1/2 cup sugar
    1 egg, beaten
    1/4 cup heavy cream
    dash salt

    ---Pastry---
    Sift together 1-1/2 cups flour and 1/2 teaspoon each baking powder and salt. Cut in 1/2 cup butter or margarine until mixture is crumbly. Combine 1 slightly beaten egg and 1/3 cup milk. Add to dry ingredients; blend with fork. On lightly-floured surface, knead gently until smooth.

    Pare apples if desired; core and slice thinly to equal 4 cups. Arrange in overlapping rows on pastry lined 15 X 10 X 3/4-inch baking pan. Combine brown sugar and cinnamon; sprinkle over apples. Bake at 425 degrees F. 20 minutes. Combine remaining ingredients and spread over top. Reduce heat to 350 degrees F.; bake 20 minutes longer. Cool and cut into 2-1/2 X 1-1/2-inch bars.
