Grilled: Cheese and Apple Sandwiches

2 tbsp Butter, divided (use less butter for lower fat) or butter substitue
1 Large onion, peeled and thinly sliced
1 Green apple, peeled, cored and thinly sliced
1 Loaf french bread
1-1/2 c Shredded colby jack cheese
Recipe
Melt 1 tbsp butter in a large skillet. Saute onion for 10 minutes or until very soft, stirring frequently, Add apple; cook and stir for 5 minutes more.
Meanwhile, cut bread on the diagonal to make 12 large 1/2" thick slices. Butter one side of each piece lightly and place butter side down in a large skillet. Sprinkle cheese evenly over bread slices.
Place the oinon mixture on half of the bread. Close sandwiches and cook until heated through.
----Cook's Notes----
Try adding one or both of these meats: 2 pkgs (2.2 oz) package sliced ham, 1 pkg (2.2 oz) sliced turkey. Use reduced-fat cheese for less fat.
