Joe Froggers
List of Ingredients
These were named when a man named Joe made them in Marblehead Massachusetts. The fishermen who bought them said they looked as big as the large fat frogs that lived in his pond by his cabin.
1 cup sugar
1/2 cup shortening
1 cup dark molasses
1/2 cup water
4 cups flour
1 1/2 teaspoons salt
1 1/2 teaspoons ginger
1 teaspoon baking soda
1/2 teaspoon ground nutmeg
1/4 teaspoon ground allspice
sugarRecipe
Mix 1 cup sugar, the shortening, molasses and water in 3 quart bowl. Stir in remaining ingredients except sugar. Cover and refrigerate at least 2 hours. Heat oven to 375 degrees. Roll dough 1/4 inch thick on well floured cloth-covered board. Cut into 3 inch circles; sprinkle with sugar. Place about 1 1/2 inches apart on an ungreased cookie sheet. Bake until almost no indentation remains when touched, 10-12 minutes. Cool 2 minutes; remove from cookie sheet. Cool completely. Makes about 3 dozen cookies.
