Recipe Introduction
I remember making saltwater taffy in youth group when I was in the 6th grade. We made it in the basement kitchen of the Methodist Church. It was a lot of fun! So I was very excited to see this old fashioned recipe posted and hope to enjoy the same fun with my own kids! After all, everyone should try this at least once!
List of Ingredients
2 cups sugar
2 Tbsp cornstarch
1 cup light corn syrup
3/4 cup water
2 Tbsp butter
1 tsp salt
Food coloring (several drops)
1 tsp flavoring (vanilla, mint, lemon, maple, etc.)
Recipe
1. Mix together sugar and cornstarch in the saucepan.
2. Use a wooden spoon to stir in corn syrup, water, butter, and salt. Put pan over medium heat and stir until sugar dissolves.
3. Kep stirring until mixture boils, and then let it cook undisturbed until it reaches 270 degrees on a candy thermometor (or soft crack stage).
4. Remove pan from heat, add food coloring and flavoring. Stir gently, then pour mixture onto greased shallow cookie sheet to cool.
5. When mixture is cool enough to handle, grease your hands with butter and pull taffy until it is light in color and has a satiny gloss (about ten minutes).
6. Roll or pull taffy into a long rope about 1/2 inch in diameter. Cut with greased knife into 1 inch pieces. Let pieces sit about a half hour before wrapping in wax paper and twisting the ends.
