    Five-Spice Rice

    List of Ingredients


    • 1 cup long-grain brown rice
    • 1 teaspoon dark sesame oil
    • 1 teaspoon grated ginger root
    • 1 clove garlic, minced or pressed
    • 1 teaspoon five-spice powder
    • 1/4 teaspoon salt
    • 1 1/2 cups water
    • 1/4 cup dry sherry or Chinese rice wine
    • a few splashes soy sauce


    Instructions


    1. In a colander or sieve, rinse rice with cool water and set aside to drain.

    2. Warm the oil in a medium saucepan and add ginger, garlic and five-spice powder. Saute for 1 minute, stirring constantly. Add the rice and salt and saute for another 2 minutes, continuing to stir. Add the water and sherry or rice wine, cover; bring to a boil, and then gently simmer for about 40 minutes, until all of the water is absorbed and the rice is tender. Add soy sauce to taste and serve.
