    5 or 6 Granny Smith or Gala apples, peeled, sliced
    2/3 cup packed brown sugar
    1/2 cup chopped, peeled, roasted Hatch chile peppers
    1 tsp cider vinegar
    1/4 tsp cinnamon
    1/4 tsp salt
    1/8 tsp allspice
    1/8 tsp nutmeg
    1 cup sugar
    1 1/4 cup flour
    Grated zest of 2 lemons
    1/8 tsp salt
    1/8 tsp cinnamon
    1/8 tsp nutmeg
    3/4 cup (1 1/2 sticks) butter
    2 tbsp heavy cream

    Directions


    Combine the apples, brown sugar, chiles, vinegar, 1/4 teaspoon cinnamon, 1/4 teaspoon salt, allspice and 1/8 teaspoon nutmeg in a bowl and mix well.
    Spoon into a greased 9 x 9-inch baking dish.
    Combine the sugar, flour, lemon zest, 1/8 teaspoon cinnamon and 1/8 teaspoon nutmeg in a bowl and mix well.
    Cut in the butter until crumbly.
    Stir in the cream.
    Spread over the apple mixture and press firmly.
    Bake at 375 degrees for 45 to 50 minutes or until brown and bubbly
