    Meatball Stew

    List of Ingredients




    1/2 cup all-purpose flour
    2 teaspoons salt, divided use
    Dash black pepper
    2 1/2 to 3 pounds meatballs
    1/4 cup shortening
    1 1/2 teaspoons celery salt
    1 teaspoon sugar
    1 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce
    1 clove garlic, halved
    2 bay leaves
    4 whole cloves
    2 1/2 cups water
    1 can (16 ounces) diced tomatoes
    12 small cocktail onions, peeled
    2 cups carrots, sliced
    1/2 cup peeled potatoes, diced
    1 tablespoon lemon juice

    Season flour with 1/2 teaspoon salt and pepper. Coat meatballs with flour mixture. In a large pot over medium heat, brown meatballs in shortening. Add the celery salt, sugar, Worcestershire, garlic, bay leaves and cloves. Add water and remaining 1 1/2 teaspoons salt. Simmer until meat is tender, about 1 to 1 1/2 hours.

    Add the diced tomatoes (and juice), onions, carrots, potatoes and lemon juice. Cook until vegetables are tender, about 20 minutes longer.

    Makes 4 large servings.
