BASIC SCONES WITH VARIATIONS
List of Ingredients
- 2 CUPS FLOUR
- 3 TEASPOONS BAKING POWDER
- 1/2 TEASPOON SALT
- 4 TABLESPOONS BUTTER FLAVORED CRISCO
- 1/4 CUP SUGAR
- 1/2 CUP MILK
- 1 LARGE BEATEN EGG
Instructions
- PREHEAT OVEN TO 450°. LIGHTLY GREASE COOKIE SHEET AND SET ASIDE.
- MIX THE FLOUR, BAKING POWDER SALT AND SUGAR IN A BOWL, CUT THE CRISCO INTO THE FLOUR MIXTURE WITH YOUR FINGERS UNTIL IT RESEMBLES A COARSE CRUMB.
- COMBINE BEATEN EGG AND MILK, MIXING WELL. ADD EGG MIXTURE TO DRY INGREDIENTS AND MIX UNTIL IT FORM A SOFT SPONGY DOUGH.
- PLACE DOUGH ON A LIGHTLY FLOURED BOARD AND KNEAD LIGHTLY UNTIL SMOOTH.
- DIVIDE DOUGH IN HALF AND SHAPE EACH HALF INTO A 3/4" THICK CIRCLE, WITH A 2" FLOURED BISCUIT CUTTER, CUT OUT DOUGH. PLACE ON COOKIE. RE-ROLL SCRAPE AND CUT OUT WITH BISCUIT CUTTER. BRUSH THE TOPS WITH A LITTLE EGG OR MILK AND SPRINKLE WITH SOME SUGAR AND BAKE FOR 10 TO 15 MINUTES.
- VARIATIONS:
ADD 1/2 CUP( CHOPPED DATES, CURRANTS, RAISINS OR MIXED PEEL, OR ADD 1/2 CUP GRATED CHEESE )TO THE DRY MIXTURE.
