Recipe Introduction
This is actually a Jewish Sabbath bread. Though my family is not Jewish, we love it as an everyday bread (either plain or made into sandwiches).
List of Ingredients
2 1/4 t. active dry yeasr
1/2 c. warm water
1/2 c. flour
2 large eggs, lightly beated
4 T. butter or margarine, melted
3 T. sugar
1 t. salt
2 1/2 c. flourRecipe
In a large mixing bowl, combine yeast and 1/2 c. flour. Mix and let sit for 20 minutes to form a sponge. Mix in the eggs, butter, sugar and salt. Add 2 1/2 c. flour and knead for 8 minutes, either by hand or by mixer. Grease a large mixing bowl with non-stick spray and put bread in bowl; cover and let rise 1 hour. Punch dough down. Let rest 10 minutes.
Divide dough into 3 ropes and braid togehter to form a braided loaf of bread. Brush with one egg yolk mixed with water. Spray top of loaf with non stick spray and cover with plastic wrap until double in size. Bake for 35 minutes at 375 degrees.
