    Recipe Introduction


    This is a cake that April's grandmother took many times for Thanksgiving when April's dad had family gatherings many years ago.


    List of Ingredients


    • 2 1/2 cups sifted flour
    • 1 1/2 tsp. baking soda
    • 1 tsp. salt
    • 1 tsp. cinnamon
    • 1/2 tsp. cloves
    • 1/2 tsp. nutmeg
    • 3/4 cup shortening
    • 1 1/4 cups sugar
    • 2 eggs
    • 1/2 cup light molasses
    • 1 can (17 oz. ) applesauce
    • 1/2 cup finely chopped nuts
    • Icing ingredients:
    • 1/3 cup margarine
    • 1/3 cup brown sugar
    • 1/3 cup light cream
    • 3 to 3 1/2 cups sifted powdered sugar
    • 1 tsp. vanilla
    • 1/4 cups chopped nuts


    Instructions


    1. Sift flour with soda, salt, and spices.
    2. Cream shortening.
    3. Add sugar gradually and beat until fluffy.
    4. Add eggs one at a time.
    5. Add molasses and beat thoroughly.
    6. Stir in applesauce and nuts.
    7. Gradually blend in sifted dry ingredients.
    8. Pour batter in 2 greased and floured square pans or 3 - 8 inch round pans.
    9. Bake at 350 degrees for 20-25 minutes.
    10. Icing directions:
    11. Combine margarine, brown sugar, and light cream.
    12. Bring to a full boil over medium heat.
    13. Remove from heat.
    14. Gradually stir in powdered sugar.
    15. Add vanilla and nuts.
    16. Spread over cooled layers of cake.
