Applesauce Spice Cake

Recipe Introduction
This is a cake that April's grandmother took many times for Thanksgiving when April's dad had family gatherings many years ago.
List of Ingredients
- 2 1/2 cups sifted flour
- 1 1/2 tsp. baking soda
- 1 tsp. salt
- 1 tsp. cinnamon
- 1/2 tsp. cloves
- 1/2 tsp. nutmeg
- 3/4 cup shortening
- 1 1/4 cups sugar
- 2 eggs
- 1/2 cup light molasses
- 1 can (17 oz. ) applesauce
- 1/2 cup finely chopped nuts
- Icing ingredients:
- 1/3 cup margarine
- 1/3 cup brown sugar
- 1/3 cup light cream
- 3 to 3 1/2 cups sifted powdered sugar
- 1 tsp. vanilla
- 1/4 cups chopped nuts
Instructions
- Sift flour with soda, salt, and spices.
- Cream shortening.
- Add sugar gradually and beat until fluffy.
- Add eggs one at a time.
- Add molasses and beat thoroughly.
- Stir in applesauce and nuts.
- Gradually blend in sifted dry ingredients.
- Pour batter in 2 greased and floured square pans or 3 - 8 inch round pans.
- Bake at 350 degrees for 20-25 minutes.
- Icing directions:
- Combine margarine, brown sugar, and light cream.
- Bring to a full boil over medium heat.
- Remove from heat.
- Gradually stir in powdered sugar.
- Add vanilla and nuts.
- Spread over cooled layers of cake.
