Arkansas Spice n' Pecan Muffins

Recipe Introduction
A platter of these frosted sweet and spicy muffins makes a pretty dessert or indulgent brunch addition. Bake some ahead of time and freeze for an easy treat!
Muffins:
4 cups flour
1 teaspoon salt
2 cups sugar
2 eggs
1 cup soft butter or margarine
2 cups unsweetened applesauce
3 teaspoons ground cinnamon
2 teaspoons ground all spice
1 teaspoon ground cloves
2 teaspoons baking soda
1 1/2 cups pecans (chopped)
Foil bake cups
Topping:
Vanilla cake frosting
Sliced Almonds
1. Cream butter and sugar. Add eggs one at a time. Mix in applesauce and cinnamon, allspice, and cloves.
2. Sift together salt, soda and flour. Add to applesauce mixture and mix well. Stir in nuts.
3. Bake in muffin pans using foil bake cups at 350 degrees for 25 minutes (toothpick test). Let muffins cool and take out of bake cups. Place sliced almonds on plate.
4. Coat tops of muffins with vanilla frosting and turn muffins upside down and dip into sliced almonds. (Baked muffins freeze well. Reheat before serving and top according to topping directions.) Yields 3-4 dozen muffins.
