Recipe Introduction
The first soda pop was sold in the U.S. in the mid-1800's and was invented by James Vernor, who named the drink GingerAle.
List of Ingredients
To make your own Ginger Ale, you will need the following ingredients:
3 ounces cream of tartar
1 ounce of bruised ginger
24 ounces of granulated sugar
2 drams of citric acid
1 ounce of yeast (fresh)
1 1/2 gallons of boiling water
Recipe
Place first 4 ingredients into the boiling water and dissolve fully.
When the water starts to cool, strain the mixture and add the yeast.
Allow the ginger ale to rest overnight before bottling.
Notes:
I've never tried the recipe myself - I found it in the book I referenced. I did some research and found that citric acid can be purchased at health food stores and drugstores. (It's also called Vitamin C)
I also looked in a table of weights and measures and found the following information :-)
Apothecary Weights:
5 grams = 7 1/2 grains
20 grains = 1 scruple
3 scruples = 1 dram
8 drams = 1 ounce
12 ounces = 1 pound
