Add to the mixture after you mix the flour and shortening.
To make:

Cheese biscuits — add ½ to 1 cup shredded cheese. Any flavor
Bacon biscuits — add ½ cup cooked and crumbled bacon and ½ cup shredded cheddar cheese
Sausage biscuits — add ½ cup cooked sausage and ½ cup sharp cheddar cheese
Cinnamon and raisin biscuits — add ½ cup raisins, 1 teaspoon cinnamon and 1 tablespoon sugar.

After biscuits are baked, drizzle with ¼ powdered sugar mixed with enough milk to make a runny icing.
