List of Ingredients
6 cups flour
2 teaspoons salt
4 teaspoons baking powder
1/3 teaspoon baking soda
1/2 cup sugar
1/2 cup oil
2 cups buttermilk, at room temperature
2 packages yeast in 1/2 cup warm water
Sift dry ingredients, except yeast, in a mixing bowl.
Put a sprinkling of sugar in the 1/2 cup warm water; mix, then add yeast and allow time to proof.
In a large bowl, combine buttermilk, oil and yeast mixture, mixing until well blended.
Add dry mixture to the liquid mixture; mix well. Pour onto a lightly floured board, knead a few times. Pinch off to any size or use a biscuit cutter.
Place biscuits on pan greased with shortening or butter, not oil.
Bake at 425 degrees for about 10 minutes.
NOTE: Dough will keep in refrigerator for one week. Also, this recipe can be halved.
One half of the recipe makes about 16 biscuits. I use 1/4 teaspoon of baking soda when I make half of this recipe.
