Crispy Citrus French Toast

5 eggs
¼ cup milk
1 ½ ounces Grand Marnier
1 teaspoon orange zest
½ teaspoon cinnamon
Dash nutmeg
6 slices white rye bread (unseeded)
4 tablespoons (1/2 stick) butter
1 navel orange, cut into segment, for garnish
½ cup Maple-Citrus Syrup (see recipe below)
Recipe
1. Combine the eggs, milk, Grand Marnier, orange zest, cinnamon, and nutmeg in a bowl, and whisk well.
2. Soak the bread in the egg mixture until just saturated.
3. Melt the butter in a large skillet over medium heat. Add the bread, and cook until crisp on the outside, about 3 minutes per side.
4. While the toast is cooking, peel and section the orange, then remove the membranes from the segments or supremes.
5. Arrange the French toast on a plate, garnish with the orange segments, and serve with warm maple syrup.
Maple-Citrus Syrup:
½ cup orange juice
¼ cup lemon juice (about 2 lemons)
½ cup maple syrup
1 teaspoon orange zest
1. Combine the citrus juices in a small saucepan, and cook on medium-high heat until the liquid is reduced by half. Add the maple syrup, and reduce by half again. Finish with the orange zest. Pour warm over the French toast.
Makes about ½ cup/Prep time: 10 minutes/Cook time: about 5 minutes
