Amazing Asparagus Cake

1 pound asparagus, trimmed and chopped (about 3 cups)
1 cup boiling water
3/4 cup butter or margarine
1 1/2 cups brown sugar
2 eggs
3 cups flour
2 teaspoons baking powder
1 teaspoon baking soda
2 teaspoon cinnamon
1 teaspoon nutmeg
1/4 teaspoon mace
1/8 teaspoon allspice
1 teaspoon ground cloves
Zest of 1 lemon
1/4 teaspoon salt
1/2 cup chopped walnuts
1/2 cup snipped dates
1/2 cup golden raisins
Recipe
Cook the cut up asparagus in the boiling water for 5 minutes or until tender. Do not drain. Cool slightly. Transfer asparagus and cooking water to food processor and process until pureed. (You should have 2 cups.) Add water if necessary. Set aside.
Cream butter or margarine until softened. Add brown sugar and beat well. Beat in eggs.
In another bowl, stir together dry ingredients and zest. Add to creamed mixture alternately with asparagus puree, beating until just combined after each addition. Stir in nuts, dates and raisins.
Pour into two 9-inch greased and floured baking pans. If desired, cake may be baked in a 9- by-13-inch pan.
Bake in 350-degree oven for 35-40 minutes or until it tests done with cake tester or toothpick.
Cool on wire rack for 10 minutes. Remove layers from pans and cool thoroughly on rack.
Frost with cream cheese frosting.
