    1/2 cup butter or marg, soft
    1/2 cup shortening
    1& 1/2 cups sugar
    1/2 cup molasses
    2 eggs, lightly beaten
    2 cups all purpose flour
    1/2 tsp. salt
    2& 1/4 tsp. baking soda
    2& 1/4 tsp. ground ginger
    1& 1/2 tsp. ground cloves
    1& 1/2 tsp. ground cinnamon
    additional sugar

    In large bowl, cream butter, shortening and sugar till light and fluffy. Beat in molasses and eggs; set aside. Combine dry ingredients; gradually add to creamed mixture, beating till dough is blended and smooth. Roll into 1& 1/2 in balls. Dip tops in sugar; place 2& 1/2 inches apart on greased baking sheets. Bake at 350deg. for 11 mins. Cool on racks. Store in a tightly covered container to maintain softness.
