1 cup (2 sticks) margarine or butter, softened
1-1/2 tsp vanilla extract
1/2 tsp salt
1 cup sugar
2 cups all-purpose flour
1 cup (6-oz) semisweet chocolate chips
Cook's notes: For extra crunch, sprinkle 1/2 cup finely chopped walnuts over chocolate chips. If desired, to prevent overbrowning, place 1-1/2-inch strips of aluminum foil around edge; remove foil last 5 minutes of baking.
Recipe
Preheat oven to 375 degrees.
In large bowl of electric mixer, beat butter or margarine, vanilla, salt and sugar until creamy.
Add flour and mix until mixture resembles coarse meal. Press mixture evenly into a 15-by-10-inch jellyroll pan. Sprinkle chocolate chips over top. Using palm of hand, gently press chocolate chips into dough.
Bake in preheated oven 15-20 minutes or until browned.
Remove from oven to wire cooling rack and while still warm, cut into squares or bars. Cool completely before removing from pan.
Yield: 22 to 28 bars
