Apple Upside-Down Cake

2 tablespoons butter, or margarine
1/2 cup brown sugar
1/2 cup chopped pecans
3 medium cooking apples, pared, sliced
2 tablespoons lemon juice
1/2 cup butter, or margarine
2/3 cup granulated sugar
1 egg
1/2 teaspoon vanilla
2 cups all-purpose flour
1/2 teaspoon baking soda
1 teaspoon baking powder
1/2 teaspoon cinnamon
1/2 teaspoon salt
1/4 teaspoon nutmeg
1/2 cup buttermilk

Preheat oven to 375F. In 9x9-inch square pan, melt 2 Tbs butter or margarine; spread brown sugar on bottom of pan. Sprinkle with pecans; arrange apple slices on top; cover with lemon juice and set aside. Cream 1/2 cup butter or margarine and remaining sugars until fluffy and light. Beat in egg and vanilla thoroughly. Combine remaining dry ingredients; add alternately with buttermilk. Spread batter over apple slices in pan. Bake 45 minutes or until done. Place on cooling rack 10 minutes, then turn upside down on plate. Serve warm. Cut into squares and top with whipped cream.
