    1/2 cup shortening
    2 cups firmly packed brown sugar
    3 eggs
    2 (1-ounce) squares unsweetened chocolate, melted
    2-1/4 cups sifted cake flour
    1 teaspoon baking soda
    1/2 teaspoon salt
    1 cup buttermilk
    1 teaspoon vanilla extract
    Creamy Chocolate Frosting
    Grated semisweet chocolate

    Cream shortening; gradually add sugar, beating at medium speed of an electric mixer. Add eggs, one at a time, beating well after each addition. Add chocolate; beat well.

    Combine flour, soda, and salt; add to creamed mixture alternately with buttermilk, beginning and ending with flour mixture. Mix just until blended after each addition. Stir in vanilla.

    Pour batter into 3 greased and floured 8-inch round cake pans. Bake at 350 degrees for 25 to 30 minutes or until a wooden pick inserted in center comes out clean. Cool in pans 10 minutes; remove from pans, and let cool completely on wire racks.

    Spread Creamy Chocolate Frosting between layers and on top and sides of cake.

    CREAMY CHOCOLATE FROSTING

    3/4 cup butter or margarine
    3/4 cup cocoa
    1/2 cup milk
    1/4 teaspoon salt
    2-1/4 teaspoons vanilla extract
    6-3/4 cups sifted powdered sugar

    Combine first 3 ingredients in a small saucepan; cook over low heat, stirring constantly, until butter melts. Remove from heat; add salt, vanilla, and sugar.

    Beat on high speed of an electric mixer until spreading consistency, add additional milk, if necessary.
