    3 cups all-purpose flour
    1-1/2 teaspoons baking soda
    2 teaspoons ground cloves
    1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
    1/2 teaspoon ground nutmeg
    1/4 teaspoon ground allspice
    1 cup butter, softened
    1-1/2 cups light-brown sugar, packed
    2 eggs
    1 egg yolk
    1-1/2 cups buttermilk

    Recipe



    Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Grease and flour 2 (9 x 1-1/2-inch) round layer-cake pans.

    Sift flour with baking soda, cloves, cinnamon, nutmeg and allspice; set aside.

    In large bowl, with electric mixer at high speed, beat butter, brown sugar, eggs and egg yolk, occasionally scraping down side of bowl with rubber spatula, until light and fluffy - about 5 minutes.

    At low speed, beat in flour mixture (in fourths) alternating with buttermilk, beginning and ending with flour mixture. Beat just until smooth - about 1 minute.

    Pour batter into prepared pans; bake 25 to 30 minutes or until surfaces spring back when gently pressed with fingertip.

    Cool in pans 10 minutes. Remove from pans; cool completely on wire rack before filling and frosting. Frost as desired.
