    1 cup butter
    1/2 teaspoon salt
    1/2 cup shortening
    1/2 teaspoon baking powder
    1 box light brown sugar
    3 cups flour
    1 cup sugar
    1 cup milk
    5 eggs
    1 Tablespoon vanilla
    1 cup finely chopped nuts

    Cream butter, shortening, and brown sugar thoroughly. Gradually add granulated sugar. Continue creaming. Add eggs one at a time, beating thoroughly after each addition.

    Sift baking powder and salt with flour, add alternately with milk, beginning with and ending with flour. Add vanilla, then nuts and blend well.

    Turn batter into a well-greased and floured 10-inch tube pan.

    Bake at 300� for 90 minutes, or until cake tests done by inserting a toothpick near the center and it comes out clean.

    Cool in pan 15 minutes before turning out on a wire rack to cool completely.
