    1 cup chopped dates
    1-1/2 cups boiling water
    1-1/2 teaspoons baking soda
    3/4 cup shortening (margarine)
    1 cup sugar
    2 eggs
    1-3/4 cups flour
    3/4 teaspoon baking soda
    1/2 teaspoon salt
    1 package (12 ounces) chocolate chips
    1/2 cup sugar

    Recipe



    Combine dates, boiling water and baking soda. Let cool.

    Mix in order the shortening, 1 cup sugar, eggs, flour, baking soda and salt. Add date mixture.

    Pour batter into greased and floured 9x13-inch pan. Cover top of cake with chocolate chips and 1/2 cup sugar. Bake at 350 degrees for 35 minutes.
