    Sweet Glazed Cherry Pie

    1/2 C. granulated sugar
    3 T. cornstarch
    1 (16 oz.) pkg. frozen unsweetened pitted dark sweet cherries
    1/2 t. vanilla
    crust for a 2-crust 9" pie (purchased or homemade)
    3/4 C. sliced almonds, toasted
    1 (21 oz.) can cherry pie filling
    1/4 C. sifted powdered sugar
    1 to 1-1/2 t. milk

    In a bowl, stir together the granulated sugar & cornstarch. Add the frozen cherries & vanilla; toss. Let stand at room temperature for 1 hour or until a syrup forms; stir occasionally.

    Place a cookie sheet on the center rack of oven & preheat oven to 375°. Prepare pastry, if making homemade. Line a 9" pie plate with pastry. Place 1/2 C. of the almonds in the bottom of pastry-lined plate. Stir sweet cherry mixture; spoon on top of almonds. Spoon cherry pie filling over sweet cherry mixture, spread evenly. Trim pastry to edge of pie plate, place top crust over filling & trim to 1/2" beyond edge of pie plate. Fold top pastry under bottom pastry edge & seal. Flute edge; cover edges with foil to prevent overbrowning.

    Bake on preheated cookie sheet for 50 minutes, remove foil. Bake about 30 minutes more or until top is golden brown & filling is bubbly. remove from oven; cool on wire rack 1 to 1-1/2 hours. Stir together powdered sugar & enough milk to make drizzling consistency; drizzle over pie. Sprinkle remaining almonds over top of glaze. Cool completely. Yield 8 servings.
