List of Ingredients
Cake
1 3/4 cups flour
1 cup minus 1 tablespoon unsweetened cocoa powder
1 1/4 teaspoons baking soda
1/8 teaspoon salt
3/4 cup butter, softened
2/3 cup sugar
2/3 cup brown sugar
2 eggs
2 teaspoons vanilla
1 1/2 cups buttermilk
Frosting
1/2 cup butter, softened
1 1/2 cups confectioners' sugar, sifted
3 (1-ounce) squares unsweetened chocolate, melted
2 teaspoons vanilla
Recipe
Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Line bottoms of 2 (9-inch) round cake pans with waxed paper. Grease paper and sides of pans. Dust with flour.
For cake, combine flour, cocoa, baking soda and salt. Beat together butter and sugars on medium speed until light and fluffy. Add eggs, 1 at a time, beating well after each addition. Add vanilla. On low speed, alternately beat dry ingredients and buttermilk into creamed mixture just until blended.
Divide batter among prepared pans. Bake for 25 to 30 minutes, or until done. Cool in pans on a wire rack for 10 minutes. Turn out onto rack. Remove waxed paper. Turn layers right side up. Cool completely.
For frosting, beat butter and confectioners' sugar on medium speed until light and fluffy. Add chocolate and vanilla. Beat until shiny and smooth.
To assemble, place 1 cake layer on serving plate. Spread frosting on top. Top with remaining cake layer. Spread frosting on top and side of cake. Let stand for at least 30 minutes. Garnish with chocolate shavings, if desired.
