Gingerbread 'n' Apples

2 C sifted flour
1 tsp cinnamon
1 tsp ginger
1/2 tsp cloves
1/4 tsp salt
1/2 C shortening
1 C sugar
1 egg, well beaten
3 T molasses
1 tsp soda
1 C buttermilk or sour milk
1 1/2 C tart apples diced Recipe
Preheat oven to 350º
Mix and sift together flour, spices and salt. Set aside.
Cream shortening; add sugar gradually and cream until soft and fluffy. Add egg and molasses. Beat well.
Dissolve soda in milk.
Add milk and flour mixture alternately to creamed shortening and sugar, beating well after each addition.
Stir in apples.
Bake in a well-greased floured cake pan(9 in. square) at 350 about 50 minutes until gingerbread pulls from sides of pan.
Serve warm with dollops of sour cream, yogurt or whipped cream
