1 egg
Salt and pepper, optional
Desired seasonings
1 lb. thin-sliced bacon
8 hot dogs
4 slices cheese
Condiments, optional
Hoagie rolls
Recipe
Prepare grill for direct-heat cooking. In bowl, combine hamburger and egg. Season with salt and freshly ground pepper and any other seasonings (such as granulated garlic or dried herbs). Mix thoroughly; form 8 hamburger patties. Spread out bacon on work surface with 2-inch spaces between slices. Slice each hot dog ("the real deal, no cheap ones!") from end to end, not completely through, about halfway through thickness of dog. Insert 1/2 slice of cheese into each dog. Place dog on 1 end of hamburger patty; carefully roll dog while wrapping it with patty. Place each hot dog-hamburger package at end of 2 slices of bacon, which should be spaced 2 inches apart (2 slices of bacon per burger-dog), carefully roll and wrap bacon. Secure bacon to each burger-dog with 2 toothpicks. NOTE: Leave each toothpick exposed on one side or other in order to remove them after cooking. Wrap burger-dogs in foil and place on grill over medium heat, but do not place directly over flame. Cook 30 minutes, then carefully remove foil from burger-dogs (hot juice -- be careful). Place burger dogs back on grill rack for browning.
Serve with any condiments, by itself or on large hoagie roll.
