    2 lbs . Navy beans .
    cold water .
    2 tsp. baking soda .
    Hot water .
    2 Tbsp. salt .
    2 cups sugar .
    1/2 cup. vineger .
    1/3 cup. catsup .
    1/3 cup. molasses .
    1/3 cup. prepared mustard .
    1 small onion ,chopped .
    1/4 lb. bacon,cut up .

    Soak beans overnight in cold water . In the morning cover and bring them to a simmer slowly, adding more water if necessary . When beans have nearly doubled in size, stir in soda and bring to boil . Pour off the green liquid and put beans in a colander to drain . Run hot tap water over them to clean off the soda water . Wash out the pot and put beans back in . cover with hot water and add the salt . cover and simmer until done, about 1-1/2.hours. When the beans are done, strain off the juice ( save for soup ) and put beans in large mixing bowl . Add the sugar , vineger,catsup,molasses,mustard,and onion, stirring well . Fill a 2 quart bean pot and another small dish-enough to take to a neighbor or a friend . Cover top of beans with bacon . Bake at 350 degrees , about 1 1/2 hours .
