    Barbecue Beef and Bean Burgers

    1 15 ounce can small while or red beans drained
    3 green onions including tops chopped
    2 stalks celery finely chopped
    1/2 pound extra lean ground beef crumbled into small pieces
    1 8 ounce can tomato sauce
    1/4 teaspoon liquid smoke
    1 tablespoon honey
    1/4 teaspoon grated lemon peel
    5-6 hamburger buns

    Spoon drained beans into a 3 1/2 quart slow cooker. Add green onions, celery, ground beef, tomato sauce, liquid smoke, honey and lemon peel. Stir until thoroughly combined. Cover and cook on low about 4 hours or until vegetables are tender. Preheat broiler. Split buns and place, cut sides up, on a baking sheet. Toast under broiler until lightly browned, about 5 minutes. Serve bean mixture on toasted buns. Makes 5-6 servings.
