    2 Roman Beauty apples
    2 fresh pears
    1/2 cup dried cranberries
    1 tablespoon all purpose flour
    2 tablespoons honey
    1 1/2 tablespoons lemon juice
    1/2 cup all purpose flour
    1/2 cup packed brown sugar
    1/2 cup quick cooking oats
    1/4 cup ground walnuts
    1/2 cup butter

    Peel apples and pears, and cut them into 1/2 inch cubes. Combine with dried cranberries, 1 tablespoon flour, honey, and lemon juice. Place this mixture in a greased 8 inch baking dish. Blend together until crumbly 1/2 cup flour, brown sugar, oats, nuts, and butter. Do not over mix. Sprinkle flour mixture loosely over fruit. Bake at 375F until brown and crisp on top, about 45 minutes.Drizzle all of butter over them. Bake in upper third of oven, pressing down on filling with a metal spatula halfway through baking, until apples are very tender and bread crumbs are golden, 50 minutes to 1 hour total. Cool 20 minutes in pan on a rack. Cooks’ note: Squares keep, covered and chilled, 3 days. Bring to room temperature before serving. Makes 12 squares.
