    2 pounds fresh or frozen blackberries
    1 stick butter
    2½ cups sugar
    1 teaspoon nutmeg

    Dumplings:
    3 cups all-purpose flour
    1 egg
    1 tablespoon shortening
    Ice water

    Recipe



    Rinse berries and cover with cold water in a large pot.

    Mix dumpling ingredients and roll dumpling dough into a thin, flat layer (may need 1/4 cup ice water or more, depending on consistency of dough). With a butter knife, cut the dough into squares.

    Put the pot with the berries on high heat and cook with the water, a stick of butter and the sugar (decrease sugar to taste).

    Drop the dumpling dough into the boiling berry mixture. While stirring, decrease the heat to medium and stir in nutmeg. Stir only to keep dumplings separated. Do not overcook, but continue to cook over medium heat for 15 to 20 minutes.

    Cut off heat and allow mixture to sit and thicken. Enjoy when cool enough to eat — great with cold milk or with ice cream on top. Makes about 8 servings.

    Peach Dumplings

    For peach dumplings, follow the same recipe except use 2 pounds sliced peaches and stir in 1 teaspoon cinnamon while cooking.
