Spiced Maple Doughnuts

3 cups. all-purpose flour
2 teaspoons baking powder
1 teaspoon salt
1/2 teaspoon baking soda
1/2 teaspoon ground nutmeg
1/4 teaspoon ground cinnamon
1/4 teaspoon ground ginger
2 eggs
1/2 cup granulated sugar
1/2 cup maple-flavored syrup
1/3 cup buttermilk or sour milk
1/4 cup butter or margarine, melted
shortening or cooking oil for deep-fat frying
sifted powdered sugar
Recipe
In mixing bowl stir together flour, baking powder, salt, baking soda, nutmeg, cinnamon, and ginger; set aside. In large mixer bowl beat together eggs, granulated sugar, and maple-flavored syrup till thick. Stir in buttermilk and melted butter. Add flour mixture to egg mixture, stirring just till blended. Cover; chill dough about 2 hours. Turn dough out onto lightly floured surface. Roll to 1/2 inch thickness. Cut with floured 2 1/2 inch doughnut cutter. Fry, a few at a time, in deep, hot fat (375 degrees) about 1 minute per side or till golden brown, turning once. Drain on paper towelling. Cool. Dust with powdered sugar. Makes 18 to 20 doughnuts.
