    3 tablespoons butter or margarine, softened
    6 slices day-old bread
    1 cup shredded Cheddar cheese (4 ounces)
    4 slices bacon, crisply fried, drained and crumbled
    6 eggs, slightly beaten
    1-1/2 cups skim milk
    1 teaspoon dry mustard
    1/8 teaspoon pepper

    Butter the slices of bread and cut them into small cubes. Alternate layers of the bread cubes, Cheddar cheese and bacon in a buttered 8-cup casserole dish.

    Blend the eggs, milk, dry mustard and pepper in a medium-size bowl and pour over the bread-cheese mixture. Cover the casserole dish with plastic wrap.

    Refrigerate for up to 24 hours. One hour before serving, remove the casserole dish from the refrigerator.

    Preheat the oven to moderate (350 degrees).

    Bake in the preheated oven for 1 hour, or until the casserole is puffed and golden.

    Makes 4 servings
