    List of Ingredients

    2 lbs. all purpose flour
    2 1/4 cups granulated sugar
    5 teaspoons baking powder
    5 large eggs
1 1/4 cup softened shortening (do not substitute)
    2 teaspoons vanilla extract
1/3 cup to 1/2 cup milk
    few teaspoons warm water
Grated rind of 1 whole orange
    1 Tablespoon anise seeds

    Frosting:
    Powdered sugar
    Milk
    Vanilla extract
    Non-pareils or candy jimmies

    Recipe

    Preheat oven to 350 degrees.
Combine flour, sugar and baking powder in a large bowl. Form a well in the center of the mixture. Crack the eggs into the well. Mix by hand, gradually incorporating the dry ingredients into the eggs. Add shortening, vanilla and milk. Mix well. Add orange rind and continue mixing. Add anise seeds and mix well. Add warm water as needed to form a soft, pliable dough. Knead lightly for about 1 minute and set aside.

Lightly grease and flour 2 cookie sheets or baking sheets. Divide dough in half and place each half on the greased sheets. Form dough into the shape of a doll or bird using your hands. Slightly flatten the abdominal area on the doll and place 1 hard cooked egg into the flattened area. Cover the egg with dough in the shape of a cross. Insert 2 small raisins on the face for eyes.

Bake in 350 degree oven for 25 - 30 minutes or until a toothpick inserted into the thickest part of the cakes comes out clean. Remove to a cooling rack. Cool thoroughly.

    To decorate the cakes:
Mix the powdered sugar with just enough milk to form a thin, but not too runny icing. Flavor with a few drops of vanilla extract, if desired. Ice the dolls and sprinkle with non-pareils or candy jimmies. Allow to dry thoroughly.
