French Family Meat Pie
Source of Recipe
Internet
List of Ingredients
1 ½ lb. ground beef and pork mixed (I use equal portions)
4-5 medium potatoes
Medium onion, diced
Garlic minced (I use about 4-5 cloves per pie)
¼ tsp cinnamon
Crushed cloves to taste (I use about a tablespoon)
Butter
Salt, pepper to taste
Pie crust*
Instructions:
Sauté onion (and garlic, if you use it) in butter. Add ground meats, salt, pepper to taste. Cover and cook slowly, stirring occasionally. Peel, boil and mash potatoes (do not add any milk, butter, etc. to them). Add cooked meat to potatoes and mix well. Mix in spices to taste. Fill pie crust, cover, cut slits in the top crust and paint with milk. Cook in oven 425-450 degrees for 30 minutes, then lower oven to 350 degrees and cook until it is what my mom called "golden done" about 45-55 minutes in all. Serve piping hot.
*This is a French family dish from Quebec, Canada. Some Québecois like to lift the lid of their piece of the pie and smear it with ketchup. I prefer not, but it is a matter of taste. Also, it goes particularly well with pickled beets.
