German Meatballs

1/2 cup white bread cubes
1/2 cup milk
1 pound ground beef
1/2 pound ground pork
3/4 cup chopped, sauteed onions
2 eggs, beaten
1 1/2 teaspoons salt
1/4 teaspoon freshly ground black pepper
1 tablespoon anchovy paste
3 cups boiling water
2 Tablespoons lemon juice
2 bay leaves
2 cloves
2 Tablespoons cold water
2 Tablespoons flour
1/4 cup capers
Soak the bread in the milk and mash very smooth. Mix with the beef, pork, onions, eggs, 1/2 teaspoon salt, the pepper, and anchovy paste. Shape into 2-inch balls.
In a saucepan, combine the boiling water, lemon juice, bay leaves, cloves, and remaining salt. Bring to a boil and place the meat balls in it. Cook over low heat 30 minutes.
Mix the cold water with the flour and carefully stir it into the gravy until thickened, then cook 5 minutes longer. Add the capers. Serves 4 to 6.
