Swiss-Style Scalloped Spuds

1 1/2 cups shredded Swiss cheese
1/2 cup finely diced onions
1 teaspoon dill weed
2 tablespoons butter
2 tablespoons flour
1 teaspoon salt
2 cups milk
6 cups cooked potatoes -- sliced
1 1/2 cups diced cooked ham or sausage
1/2 cup bread crumbs
Toss together shredded Swiss cheese, onions and dill weed. Melt butter in a saucepan; blend in flour and salt. Cook over low heat until mixture is smooth.
Remove from heat and stir in gradually, 2 cups milk; heat to boiling, stirring constantly, and cook about 1 minute. Butter a 13x9-inch baking pan. Layer 3 cups potatoes, half of ham or sausage, half of the preceding cheese mixture and half the sauce. Repeat layers, ending with potatoes on top. Combine 1/2 cup shredded cheese with 1/2 cup bread crumbs and sprinkle over the top. Dot with additional butter and bake in preheated 350 F. oven for 30 to 35 minutes.
