Strawberry Almond Trifle

1 recipe lemon almond buttermilk cake - sliced thin
1 recipe stovetop custard - cooled
4 cups strawberries - hulled
2 teaspoons Cointreau
3 tablespoons sugar
1 cup Cool Whip
Recipe
For Strawberry Layer
Slice strawberries; transfer to large bowl. Toss with sugar and Cointreau.
Assembly
In a large trifle bowl, arrange enough cake slices to fill bottom layer. Spoon a generous layer of strawberry mixture on top. Top strawberry mixture with a thin layer of custard. Repeat procedure until you have almost filled the trifle bowl entirely. End with a custard layer. Reserve leftover cake and custard for other uses. Place a heap of strawberry mixture in the center of the trifle. Pipe Cool Whip around the edges. Chill at least 3 hours.
