A Memory of Toddy Time

When we visited Uncle Boyd and Aunt Evelyn’s home in Havana, Florida, we always had tea, sweet and non sweet. It was always on the drain board ready to pour. We didn't worry about it going bad as we drank it all day long and with meals. We did have our toddy time too, though. We would usually wait until 5:00 PM and my Uncle Bill would announce that it was toddy time. If it wasn't 5:00 yet he'd say, "Well, its 5:00 O'clock somewhere." I remember one time we had raw oysters and Uncle Boyd made me drink some moonshine with it. It was very strong stuff. I guess it was corn liquor. He watched me really closely to see how I reacted when I drank it. It was hard not to shudder but I think I made muster. We usually had Bill's Bloody Marys or his special martinis. He liked to use his special home made stuffed olives. He'd add hot sauce and garlic to the olive juice in the store bought olives. One year I sent him Texas jalapeño stuffed olives. He really liked those in his martinis. Bette Joyce Faulkner Fleming
