    Three Layer Brownies

    Source of Recipe

    Personal Recipe from Iowa

    Recipe Introduction

Sent this recipe through the mail to my brother and oldest sister in 1980. It traveled well. I usually add more vanilla and sometimes cut down on the salt.

    List of Ingredients

    • 1 cup of rolled oats
    • 1/2 c. sifted flour
    • 1/2 c. dark brown sugar
    • 1/4 t. baking soda
    • 1/4 t. salt
    • 6 T. unsalted melted butter
    • 3/4 c. white sugar
    • 1/4 c. melted butter
    • 1 1-ounce square unsweetened chocoate, melted & cooled
    • 1 egg
    • 1/4 t. baking powder
    • 1/4 c. milk
    • 1/2 t.. vanilla
    • 1/2 c. chopped walnuts
    • Fudge Frosting (recipe & ingredients below)

    Instructions

    1. For Bottom Layer: Stir together the first 5 ingredients. Next stir in 6 T. butter. Pat into an 11" x 8" x 1-1/2" pan and bake at 350 degrees Fahrenheit for 10 minutes.
    2. Middle Layer: Combine white sugar, 1/4 c. butter and chocolate. Add egg. Beat well. Stir together 2/3 c. flour, baking powder, 1/4 t. salt. Add to chocoate mix alternately with milk mixed with vanilla. Fold in nuts. Spread over baked bottom layer. Continue baking for 25 minutes, at 350. Cool.
    3. Frost and cut into 16 bars. Top with walnut halves if desired.

    4. Fudge Frosting: Melt 1 1-ounce sq. unsweetened chocoate and 2 T. butter over low heat, stir constantly. Remove from heat and add 1-1/2 c. sifted powdered sugar and 1 t. vanilla. Blend in hot water (2 T.) until it is almost of pouring consistency.
