    scratch - Caramel Chocolate Cake

    1 2/3 cups flour
    2/3 cup unsweetened cocoa powder
    1 1/2 level teaspoons baking powder
    1 teaspoon salt
    1 1/2 cups white granulated sugar
    1/2 cup shortening
    1 1/2 cup buttermilk
    2 eggs
    1 1/2 teaspoons vanilla
    30 caramels
    1, 12 ounce can sweetened milk

    Preheat the oven to 340 degrees F.
    Grease and flour a 9x13x2 inch baking pan.
    Stir the flour, cocoa, baking powder, salt and the sugar
    together.
    Add the shortening, buttermilk, eggs and vanilla and beat
    together until well blended.
    Beat for an additional few minutes, scraping the sides
    occasionally.
    Pour 1/2 of the cake batter into the baking pan.
    Bake for 15 minutes.
    Meanwhile, melt the caramels and milk together.
    Spread over the warm cake.
    Pour and spread the remaining cake batter on top of the
    caramel mixture.
    Bake for 15 minutes, or a tester comes out clean.

    Try serving warm with a scoop of vanilla ice cream for a
    real taste treat.
