scratch - Milky Way Candicake
for the cake:
3 Milky Way candy bars, cut into pieces
1/4 c. butter, (1/2 stick)
2 c. flour
...(lightly spoon flour into measuring cup and level off to measure)
1/2 tsp. baking powder
1/2 tsp. baking soda
1 c. white granulated sugar
1/2 c. butter flavored shortening
3 eggs
1 tsp. vanilla
1 c. buttermilk
3/4 c. chopped nuts, optional
for the frosting:
2 Milky Way candy bars, cut into pieces
1/2 c. butter, (1 stick)
1 1/2 c. powdered confectioners sugar
1 tsp. vanilla
1 to 3 tsp. cream or milk
for the topping:
1/2 square (1/2oz.) unsweetened chocolate, cut into pieces
1/2 tsp. butter
3/4 c. powdered confectioners sugar
4 to 5 tsp. hot water
Heat oven to 325. Grease and flour a 10" tube pan.
for the cake:
In a small saucepan over a low heat, melt the candy pieces and butter, stirring until blended. Set aside.
Combine flour, baking powder and baking soda and set aside.
In a large bowl, beat sugar and shortening until light and fluffy.
Add eggs one at a time, beating well after each addition.
Add vanilla and candy bar mixture and blend well.
Alternately add dry ingredients and buttermilk, beating well after each addition.
Fold in nuts.
Pour into pan and bake for 55 - 65 minutes or until tester inserted in center comes out clean.
Cool upright in pan 10 minutes, then invert onto wire rack. Place top side up on serving plate. Let cool completely.
for the frosting:
In a medium saucepan over low heat, melt the candy pieces and butter, stirring until blended. Remove from heat and let cool at least 5 minutes.
Add powdered sugar, vanilla and cream. Beat until smooth and of spreading consistency. Frost sides and top of cake.
for the topping:
In small saucepan over a low heat, melt chocolate and butter, stirring until smooth. Remove from heat.
Stir in the powdered sugar and hot water. Beat until smooth and of drizzling consistency.
Drizzle over top and sides of frosted cake.
