topping:
4 cups flour
2 cups sugar
1 cup margarine, softened
1/2 teaspoon salt
cake:
1 cup baking molasses
1 tablespoon baking soda
2 cups boiling water
Preheat oven to 350 degrees F. Grease a 13x9x2
inch baking pan.
topping:
In a large bowl, combine the ingredients and mix until
crumbly. Reserve 1 cup of this mixture for the top of
the cake.
cake:
In another bowl, combine and mix well the ingredients.
Pour this mixture into the flour mixture and stir. Pour
into the baking pan. Sprinkle with reserved crumb
mixture. Bake for 40 - 45 minutes.
Notes: This is a cake variation of the
Pennsylvania Dutch Shoo Fly Pie.
It was called that because it is so sweet that when it
was put on the window sill to cool, somebody had to
stand watch to "shoo" the flies away.
