    Recipe Introduction

    Carol's comments:
A pasty is a whole meal wrapped up in pastry. It was brought to the U.S.
by the Cornish immigrants who came to work in the copper mines in the
Upper Peninsula of Michigan. Before the age of the lunch pail, then
miners carried their Pasties to work in a cotton pouch called a crib
bag. The miner reheated his pasty on a shovel held over his hat candle.
The pastry was a tough lean variety so that the miners could wrap it in
cloth or newspaper, and tuck them in their pocket.
MY comments, ALSO....I make these with my girlfriend. We
make them with different kinds of meat and vegetables, and
half cook them...we take a whole day to do this and then we have some for dinner and separate and each freeze the
rest to use later....yummmy, will have to look up the
recipe my girlfriend gave me and tell you how we have
maybe changed what we do from the original recipe. Great with leftover gravy or sauce, depending on which pastie
    you are having.

    List of Ingredients

    Pasties #1

    1 1/2 C shortening
    4 c flour
    1 tsp. salt
    1 cup + 2 tbsp. iced water
    1 pound round steak, cubed
    1 pound pork steak, cubed
    6 medium potatoes, thinly sliced
    1 medium onion, thinly sliced
3/4 c thinly sliced rutabaga (optional)
    salt and pepper to taste
    5 tbsp. butter
    1/4 C milk
    1 tbsp. melted butter
    1/2 C boiling water

Cut shortening into mixture of flour and salt in a bowl until crumbly.
Add 1 cup ice water, gradually, mixing well after each addition. Add
enough remaining water to make a pie crust consistency.

Shape into a ball. Let rest for several minutes. Combine round steak,
pork steak, vegetables and salt and pepper in a bowl. Mix well. Divide
pastry into 5 portions. Roll each portion into a ten inch circle. Spoon
1/5 of the filling into the center of each one.

Top each with a tsp. butter. Fold over to enclose filling, leaving 3/4
inch edge. Fold l edge over the other and seal. Cut 1 inch slit in each.
Place on lightly floured baking sheet. Brush with milk.

Bake at 350 degrees for 45 minutes to one hour. Spoon mixture of melted
butter and boiling water into slit of each pastry. Bake 5 minutes
    longer.
