Tomatoes with Bread

I think the lady said this was handed down by another family member of her mothers. Not quite sure exactly. But it reads like something we use to get at the high school cafeteria and I really liked it!
List of Ingredients
2, 15 ounce cans diced/chopped tomatoes, with liquid
1/2 to 1 can water
3 - 4 tablespoons butter
salt and pepper to taste
2 - 3 teaspoons sugar, or to taste
4 - 6 pieces of bread/toast, broken in small piecesRecipe
Use a medium saucepan and add the tomatoes with their juice and water.
Use a medium heat to warm. Add butter, salt pepper and sugar and warm.
Add the bread and stir lightly until all of the bread is covered with the
tomatoes and water. Continue to heat, but be careful or it may burn because
of the sugar, until hot.
